Beignet muslin

I decided to cut my muslin in a straight 12 and see what happened.  Please forgive the wobbly pinning at the front:

Thoughts?

It feels like a good fit at the bum area.  Any smaller and it wouldn't lie right.

There is a bit of ease at the hips, but I'm not sure how hip-hugging the pattern is supposed to be, so I don't know if it needs taking in or not.

The waist is too big, there's a fair bit of loose fabric here.  But when I sit down the waist is tight so if I made it any smaller it might be too tight and cut me in half when sitting, not comfy during meal times!!.

Lastly there seems to be a bit of bagginess in the tummy area.  Again not sure if it's best to leave his (my front pinning was very dodgy)

It doesn't seem as snug a fit as some versions I've seen, but I'm not sure how snug it needs so be.  I quite like the fit overall.

What do you think?

  1. It looks great! Like you said, you dont want to take it in too much as if the end result isnt comfy when you're sitting you wont wear it much!

  2. Looks great! My beignet has about the same amount of ease as yours does at the waist, and its really comfy even when sitting after a meal. Don't forget the facing and lining will add a bit of bulk too :)
I wouldn't worry about the extra fabric around the tummy, that bit will be interfaced so will be nice and stiff. And its really hard to pin yourself in! lol

  3. Am I right in thinking this pattern normally has pockets? The bagginess at the front is probably to accommodate them. Like you and Sarah said, probably best not to take in the waist as it will be too tight. I think it looks great!

  4. Just stumbled across your blog via A Sewing Odyssey, and I think it looks great! It could go in a bit at the hips, but if it feels like it would be too snug when you're sitting, then I would leave it as is. This shape looks great on you!

  5. Did you sit down in the muslin? Doing that should give you an idea of how much ease you'll need in the skirt.

  6. lovely shape to the skirt and it seems to fit well, you could always add some belt loops to the waist and wear a belt with it, that way it can have a snug fit but you can loosen it if needs be x

  7. I think it's a good fit and agree with Magpie Mimi, the pockets probably will accommodate the bagginess. It's amazingly flattering on you and that's only the muslin, it will look even better in your dark fabric. Can't wait to see it. x
