A weekend of progress, and a weird interfacing dilemma

I have been quite a busy girl this weekend.

John went on a boys only camping trip (sleeping in a cave, no less) leaving me free reign to cover the flat in bits of tissue paper, scraps of fabric, threads, pins, and other such sewing related mess.

So what have I achieved?

Well first off, I completed one of my gifts, so here it is one Parisian buttercup bag (please ignore the fluff and lint, this fabric is like a lint magnet!!):

This is for a work friend who is off to live in Paris for 3 months (I am very jealous).  So this cute little print seemed to be the perfect choice for the lining.

I also popped to the shops and bought all I needed for my pretty summer dress.  I decided on a large polka dot fabric for this, and will use New Look 6457 view A, making the top band and straps out of a plain white cotton.
All the fabric is washed and ready to go.  Not looking forward to fitting the bodice though, it's my first attempt at an FBA on princess seams!

I have also (finally) cut out all the pieces for my Beignet.  So that's good to go now.

But, when I attched the interfacing onto the facing pieces, the fabric ended up being a bit bubbly / puckery. Have a look at these pics:

I swear I pressed and didn't iron the pieces, so I'm not sure what happened!  Should I cut new pieces and try again, or leave them as they are.? What might have caused this problem and how do I avoid it happening again??
Even besides the weird problem with my interfacing, I am feeling a lot more focused and productive at the moment, so hopefully I will do some sewing in the week.

Oh also, I found out on Friday that I passed my final AAT exam.  Woo, no more exams ever!!!!

  1. Congrats on passing your exam!! :D
Hmm, when this happens to me, I press again with more steam from the interfacing side and then again from the right side. If this doesn't sort it, I'd cut new pieces if you have enough left over interfacing etc. If not, then I'd probably just leave it.

  2. Congrats on your AAT Law! I hope you enjoy the letters after your name & no more exams! Great productivity - the bag is so cute & the lining & magnetic clasp make it look so polished- totally cute. As for the interfacing, I don't know what to say, I've had it happen to me before, not really sure why, too hot iron? I'd be tempted to try again as you wouldn't want it to spoil what will be a beautiful Beignet

  3. Yey congratulations on passing your exam! I am loving your polka dot fabric and the bag. Not sure I can help with your interfacing problem I'm afraid. Was your fabric well ironed beforehand? I would probably try them again but then I'm a bit of a perfectionist...!!

  4. Congrats on the exam result.

Could it be that the interfacing shrunk when you fused it on? I think it is more likely to be an interfacing problem than something to do with your fabric.

  5. Thanks guys.

I think I will have another go at cutting out the facings. The interfacing I used wasn't great quality (Fabricland have stopped stocking Vilene), so I might see if I have any good stuff lying around, will go slower and use a lower temp on my iron. Would being lazy and cutting off grain on the interfacing have caused this?

It's so hard to cut exactly on grain, and the interfacing had been folded for a while and you obviously can't iron out creases on iron-on interfacing!!

  6. I was going to say the same as Rachel. I think the interfacing has shrunk as it fused. I've heard it suggested that you pre-shrink interfacing by holding a steam iron over it (but not touching it)and letting it air dry before you cut into it. Hope that helps.
